I was asked to create the cover for the Women's Day celebration for my church some years back. The committee left it up to me to come up with the design based on the theme. I prayed for days for guidance about what to draw.
When I sat down to create, this is what flowed from my heart, mind, and right hand!

Each shape, color, and marking came to me naturally. Once I stood back to marvel at my work, the images reminded me of the strong women that I have been connected to throughout my life. The three women reminded me of my NaNa and her two sisters in their youth. This piece is timeless and was a segway into me researching my African Heritage, history and ancestry.

Come to find out, each woman represents an ancient nubian warrior. I drew them out subconsciously. I needed to understand why I was compelled to show the women the way I did, so I continued to do research.

I was led to do research pertaining to the meaning of my name. I found the Kandake! This was the royal title for queens and queen mothers of the ancient African Kingdom of Kush. I always knew I was royalty!
